Baja runs on a wider range of lodging than most US travelers expect: chain hotels in Tijuana, boutique rooms in Valle de Guadalupe, beach rentals in Rosarito, and month-to-month houses that never appear on a booking site. What works depends almost entirely on how long you’re staying — pick the row that sounds like your trip and open it.

Hotels & Resorts

Best for a few nights. Online coverage is good in Tijuana, Ensenada, Rosarito, and Valle de Guadalupe — thinner as you go south or inland.

Vacation Rentals (Airbnb, Vrbo)

Best for a group or a stay longer than a few nights. Inventory is strong in Rosarito, Ensenada, San Felipe, and along the Tijuana–Ensenada corridor.

Mid-Term Stays (1–6 Months)

This is the gap. Hotels are priced for nights, vacation platforms add a heavy fee layer, and formal leases want twelve months plus a Mexican co-signer (fiador).

Health coverage for a long stay

Most US health plans pay only inside the US, and Medicare does not cover care outside the country at all — which catches a lot of snowbirds off guard. Mexican hospitals, including the private ones expats generally use, commonly ask for payment or a guarantee of payment up front. Routine care here is inexpensive by US standards; the number that isn't is an air ambulance back to a US hospital.
